The authority on the features and equipment that belong on a cruising sailboat. Written by some of the world’s most experienced sailors and yacht designers. Although written in , this book is still contains invaluable information, and is as relevant today as when it was written. Should be read by everyone contemplating offshore sailing. There's nothing like time spent living offshore and at anchor to clarify the issues, and one of the most efficient ways to do that is with John and Amanda aboard Mahina Tiare."-Steve Dashew Sailor, boat designer and author of Offshore Cruising Encyclopedia,Surviving the Storm and Mariner's Weather Handbook.       A Sail Away Offshore Cruising Boat For Less Than US$,—Part 4, Steel, Wood, Aluminum or Ferro, and Summary Colin Speedie Published Feb 2, Updated March 5,   They literally wrote the ‘book’ on offshore cruising: The Offshore Cruising Encyclopedia in addition to many other books and publications. Their boats are designed with an eye to safety, performance sailing ( mile plus days) and a plethora of practical design features built from experience in offshore environments.

I've found that inter-library loan is fantastic for reviewing books before deciding whether or not to buy them, and just a great source of information in general. Right now I'm reviewing the Dashews' GIANT Offshore Cruising Encyclopedia, Jimmy Cornell's World Cruising Routes, as well as trying to make sense of some sight tables. Cruising is done on both sail and power boats, monohulls and multihulls although sail predominates over longer distances, as ocean-going power boats are considerably more expensive to purchase and operate. The size of the typical cruising boat has increased over the years and is currently in the range of 10 to 15 metres (33 to 50 feet) although smaller boats have been used in around-the-world.
